Black History Month (February 2024): Websites

The organization behind the founding of Black History Month. Their mission is "to promote, research, preserve, interpret and disseminate information about Black life, history and culture to the global community."

This post on the Library of Congress blog highlights how collection items in the Library of Congress and the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture shed light on the Black experience.

BlackPast is a huge online reference center with historical resources covering African American and global African history, genealogy resources, bibliographies, multi-media, primary documents and more. It contains over 6,000 pages to explore.

This project was organized to respond to the inequities in health care delivery that exists between African Americans and the rest of America.

Black Health Matters provides information about health and well-being from a service-oriented perspective–with lots of upbeat, positive solutions and tips.

Health Justice is a consultancy that helps healthcare and public health organizations center anti-racism and equity in the workplace and reduce health iniquities in the communities they serve.

The Nap Ministry was founded in 2016 by Tricia Hersey and is an organization that examines the liberating power of naps. Their “REST IS RESISTANCE” framework and practice engages with the power of performance art, site-specific installations, and community organizing to install sacred and safe spaces for the community to rest together.

An organization that researches, elevates, and educates the public about solutions to address the criminalization of Black women and girls, and aims to build pathways to opportunity and healing.

A very thorough list of research guides and websites offered by BlackPast. The webpage is organized by subject and covers a broad range of topics including African American history, politics, science, arts, and more.

This is the online home of an exhibition that was curated by the Library of Congress in 2008. The exhibition is organized into 9 sections chronologically, from the era of chattel slavery to the Civil Rights Movement. Each section includes images of the primary source materials that are part of the collections in the Library of Congress.

Avoice is a project that was developed by the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Inc. in 2005 after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. The mission of the project is to capture and preserve the history of participation of Black voices in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. The online library contains “information about historical and contemporary African American policy issues important to researchers, academics, educators and students.”

This page gives a succinct yet thorough introduction to the history of the Civil Rights Movement, Brown v. Board of Education, the Civil Rights Act, Voting Rights Act, and Fair Housing Act.

An initiative of Stanford University, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Research and Education Institute was founded in 2005. The Institute is a repository for Dr. King's papers and has an education initiative called The Liberation Curriculum that produces curriculum materials and lesson plans for educators, as well as providing teacher development workshops.

From the website: "The Black, Faculty, Staff and Administrators (BFSA) Network of De Anza College is a network of faculty, staff and administrators who identify as Black, African-American, African, Afro-American or of African ancestry or descent, and those employees who support our causes and initiatives."
The BFSA have several events planned for Black History Month.

CAN/DID is a multimedia series produced by the De Anza College Office of Communication, in conjunction with the Equity Office. It builds on the knowledge and experiences of De Anza College students, faculty, and classified professionals. It is an exploration of social justice and equity issues.

A research report by the Trevor Project, a national organization that provides crisis and suicide prevention services for LGBTQ youth

A report by the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education network (GLSEN) in partnership with the National Black Justice Coalition (NBJC), that examines the educational and school experiences of Black LGBTQ youth.
