In 1982, the American Booksellers Association (ABA) showcased banned books at a trade show in Anaheim, California. Over 500 challenged books were displayed behind locked metal cages, with large displays saying the books were "dangerous". This exhibit was so successful that the Banned Books Week was created out of that exhibit.
Banned Books Week was an incredible success, creating read-along events hosted at bookstores and public institutions. The classic "brown bag of books" display facet became popularized, and even the New York Times covered such events across the United States.
Now, millions of readers view coverage and interact with Banned Books Week over the course of the year. While books continue to be banned across the United States, the Banned Books Week celebrates that the vast majority of challenged books remain available.
