Anti-Racism Resources: Whiteness

Definitions

White Supremacy - White supremacy is the belief that members of the Caucasian race are superior in all ways to other ethnic groups or races in the world. The term is usually used to describe a political ideology that advocates white social and political dominance. - Routledge Companions: The Routledge Companion to Race and Ethnicity

White Privilege - “an invisible package of unearned assets which I can count on cashing in each day, but about which I was ‘meant’ to remain oblivious. White privilege is like an invisible weightless knapsack of special provisions” (Mcintosh). She stated that this white privilege entails a pattern of assumptions that she as a white person “belonged” and was the norm. - Encyclopedia of Race and Racism

Whiteness - Whiteness is an idea developed by Europeans as an integral part of the processes of the oppression of the peoples of the Third World through colonialism and slavery. Like the concept of race, the idea of whiteness is socially constructed, that is, it has no biological meaning. Instead, it was invented by Europeans as a means to unite and create solidarity among the different peoples of Europe and to distinguish them as “whites” from nonwhites as a means to facilitate the oppression of the latter.- Encyclopedia of African-American Politics
