In a research guide dedicated to identifying and eliminating racism, you might wonder why we don’t stick to nonfiction, sources that are “true.” We made this choice because fiction and poetry have a unique power to change attitudes by helping us see the big picture and develop empathy. When we immerse ourselves in the life of a fictional character, we can’t help understanding his or her perspective. In a similar way a poem can slip inside our psyche and help us see the world in an entirely different light. Reading a poem or a novel can be an anti-racist action! (With appreciation for Hannah Frankman’s essay “The Importance of Reading Fiction.”)
